Garden

Are you looking to spend some time in your garden this weekend? I don’t know about you, but I enjoyed spending time this past week in the garden. And now, I’m looking forward to spending the weekend and the next couple of weeks soaking in some sunshine and planting plants, seeds, and seedlings.

What should I plant in late April and early May?

Here are a few items to go ahead and plant this weekend for garden Zone 6 and 7. Don’t know what garden zone you live in, find out HERE (by just entering your zip code.

This last weekend in April is the perfect time to sow seeds for most root crops. The list is long, but here is what I included in the garden, radishes, snow peas, and beets. Also, herbs can be sowed directly in the garden like chives, cilantro, dill, and Italian Parsely in early spring. The perennial herbs to start are rosemary, lavender, lemon thyme, Greek Oregano, tri-color sage, and Mint. April is also the perfect time to plant almost any leafy green. Lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, arugula, and many others will flourish this month.

Finally, edible flowers can make the garden have perfect chemistry. They help the garden keep the pests away but attract butterflies and other beneficial insects, which is essential for any kitchen garden. I have either sowed or have started seeds inside, which includes,

When it all comes together, it is called companion planting. Gardeners think of companion gardening as learning what vegetables to plant and herbs together. But growing edible flowers in the organic vegetable garden is another way to add beneficial plants. The top edible flowers begin with pansies, marigolds, calendula, and nasturtium.

Here are my local favorites—Raymond’s Garden Center in Hendersonville. They have a few varieties of seed companies and sell many edible flowers, veggies, and herb plants. Tell them I sent you!

Second, there are Sow True Seeds,  They are a local company located in downtown Asheville, NC. They also carry plenty of selections of organic and GMO-free seeds and plants. They have an early spring sale on plants, and that is how I get my jump-start on gardening in the spring.

I love the seeds from Botanical Interests. They believe that seed packets didn’t have enough information for the gardener. So instead, they decided to provide more information, including art, garden history, garden ideas, organic gardening tips, recipes, and of course, a high-quality seed.

I also love Renee’s Seeds. She has been around for so long. She started very small but turned her company into a highly regarded seed company.

A new company that I have tried is John Scheepers .

Whether you buy your seeds or plants or both, plant a small, medium-sized, or large garden, it will give you such joy to pick something fresh from the garden!
