Christmas Brown Sugar Cookies

When I think of Christmas, I think of Christmas Brown Sugar Cookies from my mother, Grandma Dona, which all the grandchildren called her, especially when making the Brown Sugar Cookies by Grandma Dona!

I also remember having the cookies made by my mom’s mother, Grandma Alfhild. We would eat the cookies with Grandpa Claire, always eating the cookie around the cherry and saving the cherry for last.

It was a tradition every year growing up that we made the Brown Sugar Cookies. When all the grandchildren were of age, they went to Grandma Dona’s and Grandpa Pete’s house to make the cookies. They got to spend the night. Of course, dinner was popcorn, ice cream, and a hamburger or hot dog from Hot Dog World.

Our children, Megan and Chris, took it another step and made the cookies every holiday. Beginning with Valentine’s Day with hearts instead of cherries, on to St. Patrick’s Day with green sprinkles and also the Fourth of July with red, white, and blue on the top. Every holiday had the cookies!

Cherry on the top Cookies

The Brown Sugar Cookies by Grandma Dona has passed on to be a tradition in every Green family household all over the country.

The cookies are easy to make! First, add all the ingredients into the mixer. Then, make sure the dough is soft, so they are easy to work with when making the dough balls! Finally, add the cherry on the top. It makes the cookies so festive!

Servings 24 Cookies

Equipment

  • Stand Mixer
  • Cookie Sheet

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. Butter – room temperature
  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 Large Egg Yolk
  • 1 tsp. Pure Vanilla
  • 2 1/2 C All-Purpose Unbleached Flour
  • 1 Container Candied Cherries – Red and Green

Instructions

  • In a stand mixer with the dough attachment, cream the butter and the sugar until well blended and fluffy. Next, add the egg yolk and vanilla and incorporate them into the butter mixture. Finally, add the flour and blend until just mixed through.
  • The dough should be moist and easily rolled into small balls. If it is too dry, add a little water to it until the dough is not as dry.
  • Roll the dough into medium size balls. Place the balls on a lined cookie sheet with parchment paper. Flatten one way and then the other way to make a criss-cross pattern with a fork. Make sure to have a small amount of flour if the fork begins to stick to the dough.
  • Add a half of a cherry, cut side down to each cookie. A link from Amazon for the cherries is listed in the blog post, but your local grocery stores should have them. They sell out quickly, so start your shopping soon.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 12 – to 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Be careful not to burn the cookies.
  • Makes about two to three dozen, depending on the size of the dough ball.
